Night

“Night” or “La Nuit” premiered in 1896 as a series of dramatic poses performed by Loïe Fuller in a black silk, star studded ‘mother hubbard.’ Fuller projected images of the moon, stars and comets on to her dress and the black backdrop. These projections were created using magic lantern technology, but Fuller created her own slides and, for the first time, had the projections rotate and travel through space.

Another dance on the same program, “Firmament,” made use of these slides again, but with colored light. Fuller explored the effects of moonbeams and the varied lights of Aurora Borealis. By 1900, Fuller had merged “Night” with “Firmament” and had enhanced the climactic storm with ‘lighting’ and an amazing dawn.
